Fatherhood²: 5 Books for Preparing Kids for School

Posted on September 3, 2012January 7, 2018 by Henry Elliss

I should probably have written this post a couple of weeks ago to be honest, since we’ve been drip-feeding some of these books for the past few months at least. But hey – better late than never! As this week will see a load of little munchkins heading off to ‘big school’ for the very…

Fatherhood²: 10 more great pre-school story books

Posted on March 16, 2011March 18, 2011 by Henry Elliss

A few weeks ago I posted a list of my 10 favourite pre-school story books, based on the ones that Robert likes to read on a regular basis. At the end I asked for some feedback on what classics I might have missed – and I got a LOT of comments with books I’d missed….

Fatherhood²: The dying art of bedtime stories

Posted on March 1, 2011 by Henry Elliss

If you read my “10 favourite pre-school story books” post, you’ll know I’m a big fan of reading Robert his bedtime story every night – it’s one of the few consistent times in our day-to-day activities, as well as being a great developmental aid for him. So, I was very dismayed to read some recent…

My Year in Photos – February 6th – “Page your Oracle”

Posted on February 6, 2010November 26, 2010 by Henry Elliss

My Year in Photos – February 6th – "Page your Oracle", originally uploaded by henweb. Despite the cold snap they’re predicting for next week, today was a lovely day here in Reading. As well as the weather, it was also the first weekend in over 3 months where Sara and I didn’t have a shed-load…

My Year in Photos – January 25th – “What shall I paint?”

Posted on January 25, 2010November 26, 2010 by Henry Elliss

My Year in Photos – January 25th, originally uploaded by henweb. Today’s photo is of something I saw very early in the day, at around half seven on my way to the M4. I don’t *actually* know what it is, all I know is it’s been erected on the massive building site next to Junction…

My Year in Photos – January 24th – “A classic evening”

Posted on January 24, 2010November 26, 2010 by Henry Elliss

My Year in Photos – January 24th, originally uploaded by henweb. This evening was a momentous evening in chez Elliss – it marked the first time that Sara and I have been out (without Robert) for well over a year. Thanks to Katy, who very kindly babysat for us, we went to see the Royal…

My Year in Photos – January 9th – “Toys, toys, toys”

Posted on January 10, 2010November 26, 2010 by Henry Elliss

My Year in Photos – January 9th, originally uploaded by henweb. Rather than post yet *another* shot of the snow today (and believe me, I’ve taken LOADS!) I thought I’d choose a shot which represented our day much better. Namely, our trip to Toys R Us! Due to the aforementioned snow, it’s quite hard to…

My Year in Photos – January 8th – “Stuck firm”

Posted on January 8, 2010November 26, 2010 by Henry Elliss

My Year in Photos – January 8th, originally uploaded by henweb. Unlike me, Sara isn’t lucky enough to be able to work from home when her office is open (since she’s a teacher!) so when Maiden Erlegh decided that all teachers were needed in school to teach poor old Year 11, she had to risk…

My Year in Photos – January 7th – “Icicles are nicicle”

Posted on January 7, 2010November 26, 2010 by Henry Elliss

My Year in Photos – January 7th, originally uploaded by henweb. As the big freeze continues to grip the country, we didn’t venture too far out of the house today – for fear of slipping over on the ice rink that is our road. So this photo was taken from our garden, looking up at…

My Year in Photos – January 6th – “Twelfth Night”

Posted on January 6, 2010November 26, 2010 by Henry Elliss

My Year in Photos – January 6th, originally uploaded by henweb. As predicted by the red sky yesterday morning, last night saw snow covering much of the country, with Reading being especially well doused. Despite having to stay at work late, I managed to make my way down the M4 reasonably easily and by the…

As today is ‘Back British Farming’ day, I want As today is ‘Back British Farming’ day, I wanted to give a shout-out to all the farmers in the local area, especially Brimpton’s own @mbowden1954. One of my favourite aspects of living where we do now is being surrounded by countryside and farm land - and being able to see an actively-farmed field at the end of our garden. Every time something’s being done to the field I’m out with my camera, usually trying to figure out the names of all the machinery - and it’s so nice to see a product being grown right from seed to harvest. I know it’s not easy for farmers at the moment, and I dearly hope ours are able to keep farming for many years to come - so if you have one near you, make sure to show them all the support you can!
