Guest Post – Things you need in your new home

Posted on February 21, 2013January 7, 2018 by Henry Elliss

So, you’ve moved into your new home. You open the door, step inside and look at the empty space. It’s yours! All you need to do now is fill it with your things. The essentials may be obvious, other stuff, not so much. Here are some hints and tips to make your new house a proper home.

Tools and Repair Stuff

Everyone needs a toolbox so that they can undertake any minor repairs, put up pictures, or put together the furniture. A toolbox should contains these basics.
1. Hammers: both Ball & Claw
2. Screw drivers: Flathead & Phillips of different sizes
3. Hacksaw
4. Wrench
5. Pliers
6. Small electric Drill & Drill Bits
7. Staple Gun
8. Tape Measure

Window Coverings

Now you have your own space, you don’t want the whole world peering in at you! Get some nice curtains or blinds to keep the outside world at bay. make sure you get dark window coverings for your bedroom to keep out early morning light.

Appliances

Some places come with appliances, some don’t. At the minimum you will need a cooker, a fridge, and a washing machine. If you aren’t very good at cooking, a microwave would be useful too. If your budget is tight, you can pick up second hand and reconditioned appliances for much less than new.

Bed

You spend a third of your life in bed sleeping, so it’s little wonder that people think that the bedroom is one of the most important rooms in the house. Make sure that you buy a bed that meets all you needs for a restful night. Good sleep means you perform better. Check out the range of beds from Bedstar to find your perfect night’s sleep.

Linens, Towels and Floor Coverings

Once you have painted your new place, why not buy linen and covers to match? Whether new towels, bed sheets or rugs, a splash of bright new colour can make any house into a home. Simple things like a patterned shower curtain or matching tea towels can really make a room a pleasant place to be.

Domestic Pets

If you live on your own, and even if you don’t, a pet can make the difference in making your home feel cosy. Check with your landlord if you rent before getting a pet. If dogs and cats aren’t allowed, why not get something smaller, like fish or a hamster?

As today is ‘Back British Farming’ day, I want As today is ‘Back British Farming’ day, I wanted to give a shout-out to all the farmers in the local area, especially Brimpton’s own @mbowden1954. One of my favourite aspects of living where we do now is being surrounded by countryside and farm land - and being able to see an actively-farmed field at the end of our garden. Every time something’s being done to the field I’m out with my camera, usually trying to figure out the names of all the machinery - and it’s so nice to see a product being grown right from seed to harvest. I know it’s not easy for farmers at the moment, and I dearly hope ours are able to keep farming for many years to come - so if you have one near you, make sure to show them all the support you can!
