Fatherhood²: Review – The Parents’ Phrase Book by Whit Honea

Posted on March 5, 2014January 7, 2018 by Henry Elliss

f18eb8eaa49d11e39ae80ec794cab8b7_8I don’t often write reviews on this blog, but the book I’m reading at the moment is so delightfully good, I felt compelled to share it with you all.

The book in question is written by a fellow blogger, Whit Honea of ‘The Honea Express‘ – but before you turn off in your droves, this one is something special. Let’s face it, most blogger-turned-authors simply replicate the content from their blog in print form, so if you read their blog you’re not getting a lot of added value for your money.

Whit’s book is different. The main thing his book borrows from his blog is his flawless writing style – if you’ve not visited the Honea Express yet, you need to check it out. Whit writes beautifully – seriously, some of his posts are pure poetry. So when I purchased a copy of his book, I had high expectations.

Thankfully, the book delivers in spades. The title is actually a little deceptive – I was expecting a joke book-style approach with witty phrases parents might say – but the content is actually incredibly insightful and useful.

Amongst the topics Whit covers are disciplining your child (fairly), self-confidence, dealing with death, creative play, friendship, conflict and more. But don’t worry – it’s not one of those preachy “this is how you raise a child” books, he deals with these subjects in a really fun way – suggesting the topics that your child will bring up, and how you might like to deal with them.

I won’t go on too much more about the book, since you need to read it to appreciate how good it is. All I will do is urge you to go buy a copy (available from all good book stores, or whatever it is they usually say!) and see for yourself.

Hopefully he’ll be working on a follow-up as we speak – I’ll certainly be pre-ordering a copy when he does!

Some lovely sunrises, lots of ice on the canal and a couple of rivers and lakes that were quickly merging together, at the expense of the newly-laid track. At least my wellies stayed strong!

One good thing to come from this week’s rail strikes (and the subsequent week WFH) was my daily sunrise walks - something I really miss when I have to go into London. Fingers crossed that 2023 allows for a few more of them.
