Fatherhood²: My Son, the next Michael Palin?

Posted on May 11, 2014January 7, 2018 by Henry Elliss

1889190_1431739563740589_671093340_nAfter a recent burst of interest in geography (hardly a surprise given his mother’s line of work), Robert has become very inquisitive about the world.

So much so that he has now started his own book of world facts and figures, and is planning which countries he’d like to visit when he’s older.

This latest interest probably started a few weeks ago, when I decided to construct a new pin-board for our kitchen – and decided to make it a world map to make it more interesting.

You can see the results of my craft session to the right, and once we’d put it up we proceeded to mark up all the countries we’d all been to – as well as creating a pin-based wish list of countries we’d like to visit in the future.

Evidently this captured Robert’s imagination, and through a series of LONG question sessions (or should I say inquisitions?) and the discovery of several child-friendly map books on his shelf, he has set about learning everything he can about the world.

From the origins of the commonwealth to the world’s tallest building – Robert is trying to absorb as much as he can. So much so that his poor teacher – presumably having been bombarded with facts after each of his inquisitions with us – set him some extra homework and asked him to collate all this knowledge in a book of his own.

You can see a few of the pages below – witness my son’s amazing geography nerdiness! Clearly his spelling needs a bit of work, but Sara translated a few of his bullet points and they include the following:

  1. The biggest country in the world is Russia
  2. The biggest island is Greenland
  3. Russia has a few factories
  4. The 9th biggest island is Great Britain.
  5. Mexico is part of North America
  6. Russia is part of Europe and Asia.
  7. Turkey is part of Europe and Asia
  8. Bananas come from Iceland.
  9. China has the most people in the world.
  10. They have World War 1 because Germany conquering other countries like France, they nearly conquered Great Britain. And the same in World War 2.
  11. The Nile is the biggest river in the world.
  12. The Amazon is the second biggest river in the world.
  13. The biggest ocean in the world is the Pacific Ocean.
  14. Brazil is the fifth biggest country in the world.
  15. My car is from Japan.
  16. A car with a lion symbol on is French.
  17. My daddy has been to Australia.
  18. My daddy has been to South Africa.
  19. Antarctica is the coldest place on Earth.
  20. The hottest place is a desert.
  21. Mexico connects North America to South America.
  22. I have been to France.

I should probably point out that a lot of these ‘facts’ were garnered from his mother and I, and some of them MAY have been given in a slightly “Oh god, not ANOTHER question” type way. Hence my reduction of the source of World War II to “basically the same as the first one” – so apologies to anybody who might be offended by my ignorance!

If I’ve learnt one thing from this whole exercise, it is that 5 year olds absorb and remember way more of what you say than I ever realised. Which can obviously be used for good, but does make you worry slightly too! Hey ho.

Here’s his handy work. Long may it continue!

As today is ‘Back British Farming’ day, I want As today is ‘Back British Farming’ day, I wanted to give a shout-out to all the farmers in the local area, especially Brimpton’s own @mbowden1954. One of my favourite aspects of living where we do now is being surrounded by countryside and farm land - and being able to see an actively-farmed field at the end of our garden. Every time something’s being done to the field I’m out with my camera, usually trying to figure out the names of all the machinery - and it’s so nice to see a product being grown right from seed to harvest. I know it’s not easy for farmers at the moment, and I dearly hope ours are able to keep farming for many years to come - so if you have one near you, make sure to show them all the support you can!
