I know I start most of my ‘review’ posts with a ream of excuses about how rubbish I am at doing reviews, or what strange things I get offered and turn away. But this week’s offer was a no-brainer, frankly.
Yes, when a nice lady representing Dominos pizza asked if I wanted to try their new range of pizzas, brought out to celebrate the summer football, I didn’t even get to the end of the email before saying a resounding ‘YES!’
As a regular (probably far TOO regular) Dominos customer, I consider myself eminently qualified to review a pizza. The only slight catch to that statement is that I ALWAYS have the same pizza when I get a take away, so persuading me to try something new is an up-hill battle.
Because I like to be fair and impartial, I made sure I ordered one of every new thing in their range – after all, it wouldn’t be a fair test if I didn’t. The new range (imaginatively called ‘Carnivale’ – clearly Dominos and KFC had a similar brainstorm!) is themed along the South American lines, and the new menu items are:
- The Fiesta – a chickeny pizza with fajita spices and a ‘Mojito’ dressing, plus some veg.
- The Rio – the Beefy pizza, flavoured with ‘Chipotle’ sauce and veg and stuff.
- Nachos – Pretty self explanatory really. Cheese on top and sauce on the side.
- Fajita Wedges – Just like the regular wedges, but fajita flavour. Simple.
We ordered our pizzas on the night of England’s ill-fated game against Uruguay, but thankfully the bitter sting of tears only came after the food was finished.
Both pizzas were surprisingly nice. I’d ordered the beef one expecting I’d have that and Sara the chicken, but as it stood we actually swapped. The potato wedges weren’t much to write home about, but to be fair, I’m not a big wedges fan anyway, so no surprises there.
The real revelation were the nachos, which were actually really good – hopefully they’ll stick around on the menu in future, as I’d definitely have them again.
As you can see, I’m no Giles Coren or AA Gill here – my pizza review doesn’t stretch much further than ‘they tasted nice’ I’m afraid. But I took lots of photos, since I think that’s a reasonably good indicator of what the food was like when we’re talking pizzas.
If they kept these on the menu, would I order them again? I’m not convinced I would, but ONLY because I’m quite boring and I like the ones I like. But if somebody was ordering them and offered me a slice, would I have one? Definitely. I’m good like that.
Pictures to follow. I doubt I’ll get asked to review any more food any time soon, so make the most of them!
