Fatherhood: Setting a budget and sticking to it

Posted on August 13, 2019April 16, 2020 by Henry Elliss

Living within your means is always a good idea. It ensures that you never have to suffer the stress of getting into serious debt. But, saying you are not going to overspend is one thing. Achieving it is another.

If you want to live a debt-free life setting a budget and sticking to it is essential. To help you to do that we have put together a few tips.

Use a budget calculator

The first step is to identify how much income you need. A budget calculator will make it far easier to do that. Using one will ensure that you do not forget anything important. This, in turn, will mean that you will be able to set a realistic budget for you and your family to stick to.

Keep track of where your money goes

Downloading a money management app is your next step. Using one will enable you to identify exactly how you are spending what you earn.

Take a critical look at your spending habits

Once you have done that, you will be able to easily identify any bad spending habits that you have. Once you have done that, you can work towards changing things so that you do not continue to waste money.

Clear your debt

Most of us end up in debt at some point in our lives. Being able to take out a loan can be useful, it could help you to buy something important that you urgently need. For example, you can’t afford to own a car that keeps on breaking down. If you are late to work several times a month, because you have had to walk instead of drive, the chances are you will lose your job. So, you need to be able to buy a reliable car that gets you to work and back.

There is no doubt that sometimes borrowing money is the right thing to do. But, staying in debt is not a good idea. The interest you have to pay will reduce the amount of money you have available to spend on other things. So, you really ought to make clearing your debts a priority.

Stay out of debt in the future

Once you have done that, it is a good idea to take steps to stay as debt-free as possible. Or failing that put yourself in a position to borrow for a very low rate of interest. If you are not already a member of a credit union it is well worth looking into the possibility of joining one. You can find out more about them, here.

Have savings for a rainy day

Saving up some cash will make it much easier for you to stay out of debt. That way when one of life’s little emergencies comes along you will have the money you need to cover the cost of sorting things out.

Setting everything I have mentioned above will take time. But, once you have got everything sorted you will be very glad that you have made the effort. You will find that your family finances will improve very quickly.

One good thing to come from this week’s rail strikes (and the subsequent week WFH) was my daily sunrise walks - something I really miss when I have to go into London. Fingers crossed that 2023 allows for a few more of them.
