The bathroom cometh…

Posted on August 15, 2007 by Henry Elliss

Finally, after having most of the suite sat in the garage for the past 6 months, the building work started on the new bathroom today, with an absolute shed load of work getting done by our fantastic new builder Tony Allwood. The first day’s progress including ripping the entire suite out of the old bathroom,…

The builder’s last day (we think)

Posted on August 30, 2005 by Henry Elliss

Well after a month of having the builders in we were very glad that Tom came back today to finish the last few little bits. He rendered the wall so its all smooth and when its dry it’ll get painted. And he tidied up the concrete on the steps as well especially over the pipe….

A new day door-ning…

Posted on August 26, 2005 by Henry Elliss

After a delay of a week or so (more like two actually!) the builders finally delivered the new back door and installed it. It hasn’t got a cat flap in yet, but they’ve done half of it. Hopefully they are coming back next week to do that, plus the rendering on the outside. After that…

A doorway appears and then disappears!

Posted on August 11, 2005 by Henry Elliss

Thursday was the day that they finally got round to starting the doorway. Tom came round on his own, and as well as fixing a few paving slabs to cover up the concrete footing of the wall (not sure what that means!) he managed to take the old window out, knock the wall out from…

Almost time for the opening…

Posted on August 10, 2005 by Henry Elliss

Today seemed to be the last day of work on the steps, before the grand opening (scuse the pun!) tomorrow – when they knock a large whole in our kitchen wall. Below are shots of the finished (apart from painting over the render) walls and steps – I’m sure you’ll agree it’s looking pretty good….

Finally coming together…

Posted on August 9, 2005 by Henry Elliss

We’re running out of things to say about all this now – the pictures pretty much say it all! Today Tom (I am reliably informed by Sara!) added the side panelling to the top portion of the steps, and finished the retaining wall at the bottom. He also did a rough "scratch" layer of rendering…

Retaining walls built in one afternoon

Posted on August 8, 2005 by Henry Elliss

Henry was at home today, due to an emergency doctors appointment to find out what is wrong with his skin. Turns out he has a skin infection which is why he is covered in blisters on his hands, legs and feet. I think we’ve caught it in time before it spreads elsewhere. Therefore there aren’t…

Day 3 of the dramatic changes

Posted on August 5, 2005 by Henry Elliss

Today was exciting as I managed to choose some slabs to go on top of the concrete. I chose some grey/green slabs in a riven pattern. They look bright in the dry and dark in the wet. Perfect. We’re not allowed to walk on them until Sunday though. The guys are leaving for the weekend…

Day two of the building work and there’s more digging to be done.

Posted on August 4, 2005 by Henry Elliss

Tom and Shaun have done a great job in terms of digging a hole. But there was still more to be dug, including this lump of concrete! Tom got his breaker and starter annoying the neighbours at 8am. He was pleased though to find that it was only about 20cm deep and about 50cm wide….

Damp-proof once and for all.

Posted on November 18, 2004 by Henry Elliss

We weren’t initially expecting to add an entry today – the next big day on the agenda was supposed to be this weekend when Mark Nicholls comes down to help out. However, on Wednesday we received a call from "Property Preservations" saying that the men who were coming to do our damp-proofing and plastering next…

As today is ‘Back British Farming’ day, I want As today is ‘Back British Farming’ day, I wanted to give a shout-out to all the farmers in the local area, especially Brimpton’s own @mbowden1954. One of my favourite aspects of living where we do now is being surrounded by countryside and farm land - and being able to see an actively-farmed field at the end of our garden. Every time something’s being done to the field I’m out with my camera, usually trying to figure out the names of all the machinery - and it’s so nice to see a product being grown right from seed to harvest. I know it’s not easy for farmers at the moment, and I dearly hope ours are able to keep farming for many years to come - so if you have one near you, make sure to show them all the support you can!
