Fatherhood: Review – Lego Star Wars Advent Calendar, 2016

Posted on November 5, 2016January 6, 2018 by Henry Elliss

lego-star-wars-advent-2016Most of you who follow or know me will already be aware of my fascination with Lego – so when I was asked if I wanted to review the 2016 Lego Star Wars Advent Calendar, I obviously jumped at the chance.

After my initial excitement, I realised I was in a bit of a strange situation. To truly “review” a product, you’ve got to open it and play with it – something I’ve always done in past reviews. But with this – an advent calendar – opening it before December the 1st seems a bit… well, a bit naughty. And as we all know, you’ve got to stay on the nice list at this time of year!

So what is a Lego-loving, father of two small children to do?!

Well, as luck would have it, just days after I was sent the calendar, I was contacted by a nice German man named Markus Land, who had read a post I’d written about the Lego photographer Vesa Lehtimäki a couple of years ago. Markus, clearly less afraid of the naughty list than I, had gone one step further than simply opening his calendar. No, Markus has done something pretty amazing. And thankfully for me, his creations mean I can show you what’s in the calendar without actually having to open it early.

My German is pretty basic at best, but from what I can tell, Markus runs a website devoted to Advent calendars of all types – why not, eh? But for this year’s Lego Star Wars calendar, Markus decided to recreate some scenes from the Star Wars movies, in some stunning photographs. I’ve included a few examples below, but you can see loads more on his site.

As you can see, the models included in this year’s calendar are some of the best yet – the Gonk droid is a particular favourite, but I can’t wait to open them all in the run-up to Christmas.

Needless to say, the calendar can be bought from all good retailers – including Amazon.co.uk

Damn, this was going to be the first year that I didn’t get the calendar, but looking at this post I think I might now need to!!!

Some lovely sunrises, lots of ice on the canal and a couple of rivers and lakes that were quickly merging together, at the expense of the newly-laid track. At least my wellies stayed strong!

One good thing to come from this week’s rail strikes (and the subsequent week WFH) was my daily sunrise walks - something I really miss when I have to go into London. Fingers crossed that 2023 allows for a few more of them.
